Why Downtown Newnan Is So Great

October 31, 2008

I currently live in Knoxville, TN, but I used to live in Newnan, GA. Newnan is a suburb of Atlanta on the southwest side. For about two years before I moved away, I lived in the old downtown area of Newnan in a loft-style apartment above a store. There were a few places similar to mine in the downtown area. What I loved so much about Newnan was how it was so active for a small town. There were restaurants, clothing stores, attorney’s offices, a locally-owned bookstore, a locally-owned coffee shop, bars, a health club, a quilting store, and much more. The beautiful and historic Coweta County courthouse was in the center of the square. I spent a large part of my off time sitting in the coffee shop sipping on a cup of coffee and reading a good book. The owners and workers knew me by name. Mainstreet Newnan, which is an organization that promotes activities in the downtown area does an excellent job of keeping people aware of the downtown area by hosting frequent events such as a monthly market day where local artists and craftsmen showcase their handmade items and a twice-yearly “Taste of Newnan” where local restuarants and residents sell samples of their food. When I was in high school in the early and mid-90s, downtown was not very active. There were some businesses that were hanging on, but most people were heading out to the outskirts of town to the new, chain store shopping areas to do their shopping. But thanks to the efforts of organizations like Mainstreet Newnan, the City of Newnan, and some private investment downtown, people have rediscovered downtown Newnan. Even though there is still quite a bit of new development occuring away from the downtown area, many people prefer to stay downtown and do their shopping, eat dinner, and pass their time. This is the type of atmosphere that makes a place great.
